Purpose of the Role

The Junior Ceramics Technician is a key role at Dundee Ceramics Workshop. Working directly with the Senior Ceramics Technician, the Junior Tech supports all aspects of the technical side of DCW, including managing the kiln firing and unloading, and maintenance of all our specialist equipment. We need someone with an eye for detail who can keep the practical aspects of the workshop running smoothly and efficiently. A core responsibility of the role includes management of the clay recycling process – ensuring that we are not wasteful with materials and maintain good levels of cleanliness and organisation in the workshop. This role will include on the job training and would suit someone who is keen to learn and develop their skills to new levels. This role is available due to the previous Junior Technician moving on to a new full time job.

About Dundee Ceramics Workshop

Dundee Ceramics Workshop is a community led charity situated in WASPS Meadowmill, Dundee. We have been operating as a ceramics workshop since 2016. Before 2016 we were known as Tin Roof, an artist-led community arts organisation.

Currently we have three staff members: Workshop Coordinator (20 hours per week), Senior Technician (15 hours per week) and Junior Technician (this role). We also have a team of paid ceramics tutors and volunteers who run classes and open the workshop for members. A team consisting of volunteer committee members, staff and board members meet fortnightly to discuss all aspects of running the organisation.

We aim to work in an organic, community led way, welcoming input from everyone who works with us, including members, staff, volunteers and users. This means that we particularly welcome people who can navigate consensus based decision making, alongside taking initiative and being able to make suggestions for how you believe things can develop and improve.

Our main activities include running regular weekly ceramics classes, providing an open access ceramics membership scheme and providing rentable studio spaces for artists and makers. We have a voluntary management committee who support the activities of the workshop and who pursue our charitable aims, including internship and training programmes, artistic commissions and workshops within the local community.
