Handbuilding Sculptural Vases
4 week course
£195 (£175 for members)
Monday’s from 12/06/23 – 10/07/23 between 18:00 – 20:00 (skips week of 03/07 for work to dry)
Over the course of four weeks you will learn hand-building and sculpture techniques that will
lead to the creation of your own beautiful vessels. This class is designed as an introduction
to these skills and by the end you should be competent hand-builders, able to go home and
build your own funky vessels. Before the invention of the pottery wheel all ceramics were
built purely by hand. Making you all part of an ancient tradition of potters. The breakdown of
our time together is as follows:
Week 1 – Learn how to construct vessels using techniques like coiling and pinching.
Week 2 – We’ll focus on sculpting skills, looking towards figures and objects from nature as
Week 3 – We will put everything together and work on creating a single large sculptural vase
Break Week – during this week the work will be left to dry and go through the first firing,
known as the bisque firing, reading for the next week.
Week 4 – We’ll decorate and glaze the bisqued pieces ready for its final firing.
