Handbuilding
£215 (£195 for members)
This project starts by looking at the canopic jars of ancient Egypt found in the pyramids, and will be best suited to those who have some experience of handling clay.
The aim is to gain control over hand building techniques in order to replicate the same purity of form of Egyptian Canopic Jars, and to model the head of a creature, real or imaginary as the lid of the jar. When completed, the unfired jar may be burnished and its surface prepared for smoke firing, if the maker chooses. Otherwise, final treatments and possible decoration will be discussed in the class.
Join our tutor Jenny Rae to create your very own lidded jar over the course of 4 weeks!
Class Timetable
Week 1 – Introduction and Demo. Using historical sources to inspire hand built work. Coiling and sculpting techniques will be used to start creating the vessel. Sketchbooks will be used to formulate ideas.
Week 2 – Finish making the main body of the vessel and refine the surface.
Week 3 – Create and model the lid of the jar in the shape of an animal’s head. After watching a demo, this will be fit to the jar.
Week 4 – Refine the construction of the lidded jar. Burnishing the vessel is recommended if the jar is to be smoke fired. Firing and decorating methods will be explained during this session.
Note: The McManus Gallery in Dundee has a collection of ceramics from ancient cultures including Egypt. It is worth visiting in lieu of this project.
