Cups & Bowls – Coil Building & Sgraffito

Cups & Bowls – Coil Building & Sgraffito | Persy Russell

Day Course

£50 (£45 for members)

Saturday 01/04/23 between 10:00 – 13:00

Together we will create a set of a bowl and a mug using handbuilding techniques like coiling and decorating them using Sgraffito. This class is designed as an introduction to both of these skills and by the end you should be competent coilers, able to go home and build your own funky vessels.

Coiling involves the creation of long raw clay cylinders that we will use to construct the bodies of our pottery. Before the invention of the pottery wheel, coiling was the most popular way to create vessels for storing food and drink. It remains a lo-fi way to make organic and uniquely shaped objects.

Coming from the italian to scratch, sgraffito involves painting over the finished forms with coloured slips (liquid clay) and then carving into the surface revealing the natural clay colour underneath. Doing this we can create intricate designs and drawings atop your bowls and cups.

The pieces will be cared for by our skilled technicians. Once dried they will go through a first firing (bisque) then dipped in a transparent glaze and fired again after which they will be food safe and ready for you to pick up and take home and enjoy.

We encourage you to think about your designs beforehand and perhaps even bring in some
sketches on the day.
